Ten frames are one of my favorite tools in the classroom for building number sense. Since my students loved our apple ten frame printables, I knew they would love to work with some fall ten frames as well!

These fun printables are great way to build number recognition and counting skills with preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Getting Ready

These fall ten frames were a cinch to prep. I simply printed, grabbed crayons and that was it!

You will want to decide if you are using the sheets for morning work, small groups or math centers (or any other use that is helpful) so that you know how many copies you will need.

If I use them in math bins, I always run off extra since someone inevitably takes the last one, and I don’t want to be without supplies in the middle of math centers.

Fall Ten Frame Printables

The first printable was great to use in a math bin because it got my kids working on number recognition. It had them really focusing on one-to-one correspondence as they read the number then counted and drew “leaves” in the ten frames with their crayons.

It is challenging for many students to count and draw at the same time – so it was a great stretch exercise for them.

Plus, some of my kids enjoyed being creative with their leaves and how they designed them (blue, purple – they had fun with it!)

The second printable I found worked really well for morning work as students arrived because it gave them a quick review of counting skills and number writing.

Students quickly counted up the leaves in the ten frames or subitized them (recognized the total without counting one by one). Then, they wrote the total on the leaf.

We work hard on developing our number sense skills like number recognition, counting, subitizing, and one-to-one correspondence, and these fun printables gave us some extra practice in a quick, easy-prep way!

Getting Ready

To prep the addition activity, I simply printed everything onto card stock and laminated each page.

Then, I cut the pieces apart, slipped them into a labeled gallon-sized baggie, and in just minutes I was ready to go!

Fourth of July Addition Activity

Math centers are an integral part of math time in my classroom, so when I said I had a new learning center to introduce, my students perked up and wanted to see it.

We gathered on the carpet and I popped one of the addition cards underneath our document camera. It read 8+2+6.

I asked my students to quickly show me how they felt about about this math problem: a thumbs up for “it’s easy,” sideways for “I’m not sure,” and a thumbs down for “I need you to teach me”.

Then, I called on one of my students who had shown me a thumbs up and said, “I noticed you were confident about doing this math problem. Do you want to try it and explain your thinking?”

My first grade friend smiled and explained that he knew the answer was 16 because 8+2 was 10 and then he “just added 6 more” to get 16.

I applauded him and headed over to our whiteboard to write the problem out– nice and big.

I reiterated his statement by circling the first two numbers and saying, “So what I’m hearing is that you added the first two numbers together, and then worried about adding on the third number after that.”

He nodded and I finished showing my work to get 16.

After confirming this method, I pulled another problem under our document camera. It read 7+3+4.

I asked, “Who can help me figure our next problem out?”. Thankfully, many more kiddos shot their hands up in the air for their chance to participate.

One of my little girls explained her thinking and was right as well! Then, I told my students to simply remember that they should add the first two numbers, then the third number during this addition activity.

For guided practice, students paired up with the person next to them and I handed each pair a card.

They discussed the answer and then turned back to face the front.

My class quickly caught on that the first two numbers on each card was adding up to ten, so I complimented them for noticing it.

Lastly, I showed my students the 13, 14, 15, and 16 cards and stated that when they chose this center during their independent work time, they could spread all the pieces out and sort the addition problems into piles.

We continued onto our daily math workshop rotations, but I made it a point to check in with students when they excitedly worked on this math activity for the first time.

Getting Ready

To prep this number match activity, I printed the buckets and starfish on cardstock and laminated them for extra durability.

Cutting them with my paper cutter was easy, as the images have black-line boxes to help with a quick and easy prep.

I separated the bucket cards from the starfish cards and placed all the images face up on the table.

For fun, I grabbed a small sand shovel from the play area for matching.

Base 10 Bucket Number Match

To play, the first student picked a starfish card with the number 13, said the number out loud and then looked for the matching bucket piece.

She picked up several cards, counting out loud before she moved to the next card to find the correct match.

Once she found the right pair, she scooped up both pieces with her shovel.

The process continued until all the students had a turn and each starfish was paired.

Extension Activity

Once my students were more confident in their matching, I mixed it up.

I laid all the starfish cards on the table and mixed up all the bucket cards in a small sand pail.

Kids took turns drawing a bucket card from the pail, reading it aloud to the group and competing against each other to shovel up the correct answer the fastest.

They loved the friendly little competition and I loved that they were building up rapid number fluency!

Getting Ready

Prepping the skip counting puzzles was quick and easy.

I printed the sheets (below) on cardstock to give them extra durability and make the colors pop.

Then, I cut around the border of each ice cream scoop and cone to separate the pieces.

I slid each set in a separate Ziploc (one for the 10s, another for the 5s, etc.) to keep the pieces together. Then, I called Middle Brother (age 4.5) over to join me.

Skip Counting Puzzles

I knew the activity would be a hit the moment he laid his eyes on the ice cream scoops. It was love at first sight!

He’s been practicing skip counting by tens at preschool, so I had him work on that set first.

He looked through the pile of scoops and pulled out the ten. Then, he carefully slid it on top of the cone.

Counting out loud, he realized that 20 was next.

One scoop after the next, he stacked them in order.

He was thrilled to discover that all of the ones had zeros and the tens counted up by one. It was a major ah-ha moment!

After building the tens puzzle several times, he was eager to take on a new challenge and grabbed the bag of fives.
