What a fun STEM project for kids! Build straw bridges to learn about engineering.

Simple Halloween science experiment! 🎃 (This one’s *so much* fun.)

When you take two oranges – one peeled and one unpeeled – and drop them into a glass of water, one will sink and one will float. Why? 👇

It has to do with buoyancy. When an object can displace an amount of water that is greater than or equal to its weight, the object will float.

Since the orange peel makes the fruit bigger, it is able to displace more water than its weight. The unpeeled orange easily floats.

But the minute that you remove the peel, the orange gets smaller and suddenly it cannot displace enough water to equal its weight. The peeled orange sinks right to the bottom.

It is the same reason why a gigantic cruise ship can float on water but when you are swimming in a pool and curl into a ball, you sink just like a rock.

This science experiment is hands-down the COOLEST pumpkin in the patch!

Here’s the step-by-step:

Grab a box of Reese’s Pieces.

Sort them by color.

Arrange them on a white plate to make a pumpkin outline.

Pour enough hot tap water in the center of the plate to cover the bottom.

Watch the magic!

Here’s the science behind it:

An object’s state of matter can change. For instance, ice can melt into water and become liquid.

Then, when that liquid gets hot enough, it can evaporate into water vapor and become a gas.

That’s the same kind of change that happens in this science experiment! The sugar coating on the candy melts in the warm water changing it from a solid to a liquid. And because the candy coating is colored, we can watch it all happen before our own eyes!

Super quick science experiment for kids! 🥳 This is proof that inspiring science doesn’t have to be complicated... In fact, you probably have all the supplies you need in your kitchen right this second. 👏

Here’s how to do it…

1️⃣ Pour water into a bowl.

2️⃣ Shake a thin layer of pepper on top.

3️⃣ Dip a toothpick in dish soap.

4️⃣ Place the tip of the toothpick in the center of the bowl and watch the pepper immediately race to the sides just like magic.

5️⃣ Repeat over and over again because it’s so dang fun.

Here’s the science behind it…

The water has surface tension that keeps all of the molecules in their spot. When you touch the surface of the water with the dish soap, it breaks that surface tension, causing the water to quickly pull the pepper away from the soap and toward the outside edge.
