To prep, I simply printed the puzzles (below) on cardstock and ran them through my laminator to give them extra durability.
Then I cut along the bold black lines to separate the pieces and secured each set with a paperclip to keep it together.
Viola! The activity was ready for play.
Since Little Sister (age 3) is still learning to recognize the numbers 1 to 10, we started with the number one set and worked our way up in 1, 2, 3 order.
She grabbed the number 1 card and we read the symbol and word together, “That says one and those letters say one too!”
Then she grabbed the giraffe card and counted it out loud: “One. There’s just one giraffe.”
She slid it in place and then showed one with her fingers before sliding the finger card in the last spot.
One card after the next, she worked her way through all ten sets.
Although she wasn’t ready for the challenge yet, a natural next step would be mixing up several sets of puzzles and having kids sort them out again. Students could even sort all ten sets at once!
