GETTING READY
To prep the activity, I printed all of the pages on cardstock and laminated them for durability.
Then I cut out each puzzle and put the cards into three piles: ten frame trees, ornaments, and presents.
HOLIDAY TREES NUMBER PUZZLES
To play this game, students need to match each ten frame tree to the correct ornaments with the same number AND the present that represents that number.
The first time through, I used the cards with a small group of students at my teacher table so I could easily check for understanding.
Working our way around the table, students took turns picking a ten frame tree card from the pile and carefully counting the dots on the ten frame.
This child chose the tree with nine dots.
The student needed to find the card with nine ornaments on it to match the tree!
Finally, she found the present that had a number 9 on it to put “under” the tree.
Her holiday puzzle was complete!
We went around the table and took turns matching all of the trees with the correct presents and ornaments.
Once students understood how to play the game, it was easy to add to our independent math centers so kids could get extra practice.
