Leprechaun Count and Match

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner! My students love doing activities with sneaky little leprechauns trying to hide their pot of gold, so I was excited to pull together a count and match activity with a fun St. Patty’s Day twist.

Kids will love this playful game working on number recognition and counting for numbers 1 to 20.

Getting Ready

To prep the activity, I printed all of the pages on cardstock and laminated them for durability. Then, I cut along the dashed lines to separate the pieces.

To make my students even more excited, I put the leprechaun cards in one bin and the pot of gold pieces in a smaller cup beside it.

I first played this game with my students in a small group to make sure that they knew exactly what to do.

Each student picked a leprechaun card from the green bin and took a look at the number the leprechaun was holding.

In this example, the student picked number 9.

Next, she needed to find the matching pot of gold piece with nine coins on it. She placed that first pot of gold on one end of the rainbow.

Then, she needed to find the other pot of gold piece that had 9 counters in a ten frame.

When she was finished with the card, the rainbow had two matching pots of gold under it!

Students kept working until they had matched all of the pots of gold to the leprechauns.

Then, they put all of the pieces back in the bins so we were ready for our next round of leprechaun math.
